On Conservative Smoothers for Turbulent Convection: an Alternative Simulation Shortcut

چکیده
Most turbulent flows can not be computed directly from the Navier-Stokes equations, because they possess far too many scales of motion. The computationally almost numberless small scales result from the nonlinear convective term which allows for the transfer of energy from scales as large as the flow domain to the smallest scales that can survive viscous dissipation. In the quest for a simulation shortcut, we propose to smooth the convective term in such a way that the symmetries that yield the invariance of the energy, enstrophy (in 2D) and helicity are preserved. This requirement yields a class of conservative smoothers. The numerical algorithm used to solve the governing equations also preserves the symmetries and is therefore well-suited to test the proposed simulation shortcut. The simulation shortcut is successfully tested for turbulent channel flow (Reτ = 180). NAVIER-STOKES EQUATIONS AND TURBULENCE The Navier-Stokes equations provide an appropriate model for turbulent flow. In the absence of compressibility (∇ · u = 0), the equations are ∂tu+ C(u, u) +D(u) +∇p = 0 (1) where the nonlinear, convective term is given by

Central-difference schemes on non-uniform grids and their applications in large-eddy simulations of turbulent jets and jet flames
The conventional second-order central finite-difference schemes for discretizing the convection terms on non-uniform structured grids are revisited in the context of large-eddy simulations (LES) of turbulent flows. Two schemes are discussed: one is based on the standard finite-difference form on uniform grids (SCHEME-I) and the other is based on the Taylor series expansion (SCHEME-II). The two ...

Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow behind a cylinder, wake flow, using the random vortex method for an incompressible fluid in two dimensions is presented. In the random vortex method, the primary variable is vorticity of the flow field. After generation on the cylinder wall, it is followed in two fractional time step in a Lagrangian system of coordinates, namely convection and diffu...

We look at multigrid methods for unsteady viscous compressible flows. We specifically target smoothers that can be used in parallel and without computation of a Jacobian, which are particlarly attractive candidates in the context of Discontinuous Galerkin discretizations. In CFD, a plethora of nonlinear smoothers have been suggested which are hard to analyze. Our methodology is to use a linear ...

Turbulent mixed convection of a nanofluid (water/Al2O3, Φ=.02) has been studied numerically. Two-phase mixture model has been used to investigate the effects of nanoparticles mean diameter on the flow parameters. Nanoparticles distribution at the tube cross section shows that the particles are uniformly dispersed. The non-uniformity of the particles distribution occurs in the case of large nano...
